NORMAN, OKLA, (April 24, 2007) – Chad Roller, Ph.D., Vice President of Research at Ekips Technologies, announced today that the United States Patent and Trademark Office has issued a key patent (no. 7,192,782) relating to a method for determining concentrations of biomarkers in exhaled breath.

The patent covers a novel method for obtaining reliable concentrations of specific trace gases. The patented method, currently employed in Ekips’ Breathmeter™ product, eliminates the need for routine instrument calibration using reference gases and represents a drastic reduction in the complexity of breath analysis technologies. This is of particular importance in deploying instruments in hospitals, physicians’ offices and home health care settings for the analysis of biomarkers in exhaled breath. 

The method has immediate applications in assessing lower airway inflammation, a hallmark symptom of asthma, by measuring NO levels in exhaled breath.  Ekips is also investigating the use of the Breathmeter instrument for detection of exhaled biomarkers related to cancer and infectious disease. According to Dr. Roller, “Breath analysis has the potential to become a routine, non-invasive indicator of human health. The issuance of this patent puts Ekips in a key position to bring user friendly breath analysis products to market.”
