The Breathmeter is an instrument that measures specific biomarker molecules in exhaled breath. It uses mid- infrared tunable diode laser spectroscopy (TDLS) to measure specific gas phase molecules with sufficient sensitivity for medical applications. The table below lists some of the molecules that medical research has linked to different health conditions along with prominent mid-IR absorption bands. Breath analysis offers the promise of a truly revolutionary new tool for improving healthcare without adding significant new costs since expensive reagents or consumables are not needed. The Breathmeter is currently available for research purposes only, it has not been cleared for clinical use by the FDA.
